BLOEMFONTEIN <\/strong>– Enigeen wat al ‘n katarak laat verwyder het, sal vir jou vertel hoe wonderlik jou visie is daarna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Cure Daghospitaal in Brandwag voer vandeesweek ‘n katarak-blitz uit met 48 pasi\u00ebnte wat hierdie operasie ondergaan danksy prof. Wayne Marais (oftamoloog) en dr. Simanga Vuthela (narkotiseur) en die personeel en bystand van di\u00e9 daghospitaal. Marais is ook die hoof van die departement oftamologie aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Net Maandag 27 Oktober alleen is 24 operasies gedoen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna van Staden, een van die pasi\u00ebnte wat die middag geopereer is, s\u00ea die operasie was glad nie so erg nie. “Dr Marais weet wat hy doen. Ek was baie gerus tydens die operasie,” s\u00ea sy toe sy uit die teater kom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ook oom Fanie Smith (87) en sy vrou Nelie (83) is Maandag geopereer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ek het Sondag verjaar,” vertel oom Fanie waar hy buite die teater op die operasie gewag het. “Dit was Sondag ook presies 64 jaar vandat ek my vrou ontmoet het. Ons het vir 42 jaar geboer.” Deesdae bly die egpaar op Dewetsdorp, hoewel tannie Nelie meestal kinders in Bloemfontein oppas. Oom Fanie s\u00ea dit is spesiaal dat hulle albei kon deel in die operasies wat hier by die hospitaal uitgevoer is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marais s\u00ea die vorming van katarakte is deel van die normale verouderingsproses. “Dit word reeds sedert die jare 1980 met operasies verwyder. Natuurlik het ons net vandag baie beter toerusting waarmee die operasies uitgevoer kan word sodat die pasi\u00ebnt dieselfde dag nog huis toe kan gaan.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘n Katarak is ‘n verdowwing van die oog se lens wat veroorsaak dat die pasi\u00ebnt se sig dof word en dit moeilik is om in die nag te sien of kleure duidelik te onderskei. Dit word dikwels veroorsaak deur veroudering. Risiko-faktore sluit in diabetes, rook en oormatige blootstelling aan sonlig.
