Toe ons vroe\u00ebr vanjaar ons wintervakansie beplan, het my vrou, Anneke, voorgestel ons besoek die Namakwa- Nasionale Park, suidwes van Springbok in die Noord-Kaap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Namakwaland is bekend vir die skouspelagtige blomme wat elke jaar wild hier opkom en ‘n paar weke lank besoekers van heinde en verre trek. Die blomseisoen kom gewoonlik eers in Augustus, en ons sou slegs vroeg in Julie kon wegkom \u2013 maar dit was nie ons hoofdoel nie; ons wou net wegbreek. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons was aangenaam verras toe ons sommer anderkant Garies reeds plek-plek veldblomme langs die pad sien. Daar was nie grense aan my genot nie. Dit was die oorspronklike mooi \u2013 eg en onopgesmuk.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En vreedsaam, want die besoekers wat jaarliks hierheen stroom, het nog nie besef die blomme was vanjaar vroeg nie. Die hele, grote park het in elk geval net vier vakansiehuisies te huur. Hier is ook 11 verskillende kampterreine, maar dit is aan die Weskus, meer as 100km ver van die Skilpad-ruskamp waar ons uitgespan het. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die uitsig van die Dak van Namakwaland is asemrowend. Van die platorand byna 800m bo seespie\u00ebl af val die aarde in golwe heuwels weg na die oseaan, wat ‘n dun, blou strepie doer ver op die horison is. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Di\u00e9 park is eers in 2002 amptelik geproklameer, en so onlangs soos verlede jaar het die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Parke (SANParke) ‘n aangrensende plaas aangekoop om die park uit te brei tot die sowat 1 400km\u00b2 wat dit beslaan.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Di\u00e9 sekelvormige natuurreservaat l\u00ea deels in die Karoo se vetplant-streek, wat gekenmerk word deur die grootse verskeidenheid van di\u00e9 geharde plante op aarde. Sowat 1 000 plantspesies kom slegs hier voor.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die park is in ‘n uitstekende toestand danksy die harde werk van beamptes soos Daile Beukes en Bianca Kriel. Almal is hulpvaardig en deel hul kennis mildelik.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omgewingsbeampte Reginald Christaan leer ons van geelsneeu en wit s\u00f4e, bittergousblom en soetgousblom, pietsnot en snolknol, slymstok en sandolyf, gansogies, bobbejaan-gesiggies en kattekrui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hier is heelwat kokerbome, maar kokerdoosblom (of uilblaar) was vir my ‘n ontdekking. So ook sambreeltjies, ‘n gepaste naam vir hierdie soort felicia (of astertjie) met kroonblare wat ondertoe hang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘n Ander gunsteling was die dubbele gousblom, waarvan die hange by Kookfontein oranje gevlam het.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nog ‘n treffer was bokhoring, struike met donkerpienk blomme wat di\u00e9 naam vanwe\u00eb hul dun, skerp saadpeule dra.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Die mense noem dit ook koek-en-tee, want die sap is soet as hulle vars is,” vertel Reginald.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terug op kantoor stel Reginald ons aan Deslin van Schalkwyk voor. Sy doen diens by ontvangs. Ek vra haar uit oor die netjiese, klein kerkhof waar die korhaan-staproete begin.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Dit is die mense wat laaste hier op die plaas Skilpad geboer het se voorsate wat daar begrawe l\u00ea,” s\u00ea sy. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons vind uit daar is nog ou grafte in die park \u2013 by Koeroebees, ‘n samestelling van twee Nama-woorde, “koeroe” vir grawe en “bees” vir water. Daar is standhoudende water by di\u00e9 plekkie danksy twee fonteine.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons sien dit is net 10km van ons blyplek af, en besluit om met ons bergfietse daarheen te ry. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit is al die pad afdraande \u2013 so steil dat die eerste deel van die grondpad met ‘n sement-oppervlak vervang is, anders sukkel selfs viertrekvoertuie om van onder af weer bo uit te kom.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons sien ‘n rooikat by ‘n stroompie waar ons ‘n rukkie asem skep. Die dier spring die bosse in, maar oor die volgende bult kom die kat weer \u2013 vermoedelik uit nuuskierigheid.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons sien jakkalse, gemsbokke, springbokke, steenbokkies, rooihartebeeste, dassies, muishonde en ‘n toktokkie \u2013 en elders in die park ‘n meerkat wat kiertsregop staan, ‘n groot haas wat met wippende ore stadig weghop, en ‘n broeipaar dikkoppe wat verstar toe hulle ons sien. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By Koeroebees kom ons op murasies af. Dit is huise van klip, klei en hout wat met die jare verweer het. Op ‘n inligtingsbord word genoem ses gesinne het in ‘n stadium hier gewoon. Die grond is in 1844 aan ene JHS Aggenbach toegeken. Die laaste gesin het in 1963 weggetrek. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘n Kort staproete lei na nog grafte. Hulle is ook omhein, maar hier is nie grafstene met name en datums nie. ‘n Plakket noem net dat plaaswerkers hier begrawe is. In die dood is di\u00e9 mense van Namakwaland anoniem.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nog iets val ons op \u2013 plek-plek is daar vreemde sirkels in die veld. In die parkgids lees ons d\u00edt word “heuweltjies” of “kraaltjies” genoem \u2013 die oorblyfsels van antieke termietneste wat tot 30 000 jaar oud is. Die insekte se bedrywighede het die grond s\u00f3 verryk dat dit steeds vrugbaarder as omliggende dele is, met die gevolg dat gras en blomme in kringe daarop opslaan.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat ‘n voorreg om die Namakwapark te beleef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
