The South African Brics (South Africa, Brazil, Russia, India and China) Business Council is calling on the finest upcoming technology gurus to apply to represent the country in this year’s Brics Future Skills Challenge.

The challenge is aimed at helping to solve problems that Brics are facing around energy, water and health.

This major event will be hosted in person and virtually by South Africa in Johannesburg from 12 to 15 September. About 120 South Africans are sought.

Students enrolled at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, as well as professionals aged between 16 and 35 are encouraged to apply. Individuals and teams can enter.

The selected few will compete against others from Brics countries. Their travel expenses will be covered in order for them to take part in the initiative aimed at solving real-world problems in their specific skill area, supported by subject experts.

Selected South Africans will compete in the following categories:

  • aircraft maintenance;
  • agri IOT;
  • building information modeling;
  • cyber security;
  • data science;
  • digital twin;
  • drones;
  • internet marketing;
  • manufacturing robotics;
  • mobile app development;
  • renewable energy; and
  • robotic process automation.

Joanne Brink, founder of TechWays and project lead at Brics Future Skills, said the benefits of participating in the challenge extended beyond recognition as one of South Africa’s top technological minds.

“If you are selected, you will receive training and exposure to real-world case studies. You will receive a certificate, international experience to add to your CV and an opportunity to benchmark your skills at a global level,” she explained.

“Those who perform well in the competition will be introduced to employers and will be recognised as one of the top South Africans in their field.”
