South Africa has the highest reported rate, worldwide, of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), a group of lifelong conditions caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

This is according to a report by aware.org, which highlights the challenge in South Africa.

The organisation is intensifying its efforts to raise awareness about the negative effects of FASD, aligning with World Birth Defects Day on 3 March. Focus will be on the importance of preventing FASD.

“Through education and outreach efforts, we aim to empower expectant mothers with knowledge, and support them in making informed and wholesome decisions about their health and the health of their unborn children,” said Dr Leana Olivier, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (Farr).

“Due to the stigma linked to FASD, pregnant women with alcohol abuse challenges are often stigmatised.”
