KESTELL – Two of four suspects connected with the murder of a Bangladeshi businessman, Mohammed Shamsul Alam (46), in February last year are set to make their first appearance in the Kestell Magistrates’ Court today, 25 August. This came after their arrest by the Harrismith Public Order Policing (POP) Unit in Harrismith, following ongoing investigations concerning the murder.

WO Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson for the police, said members of the unit arrested the two men on 22 and 23 August, acting on information received from community members.

“The suspects, both 30 years old, are facing murder charges. They are among four suspects wanted in connection with the murder of businessman Mohammed Shamsul Alam, who was killed inside his shop in Kestell in February 2024. He was shot multiple times. It is alleged that on the day of the incident, four unknown men entered the shop without saying a word and fired several shots at the businessman in full view of his girlfriend. The victim succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds he sustained and was declared dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The suspects fled the scene on foot without taking anything,” said Mophiring.

He said the investigations revealed that the second suspect is currently out on bail for another murder that took place in Harrismith in August last year.

Mophiring said the Thabo Mofutsanyana district detectives are continuing with the investigations regarding the two murder cases.

“The police are confident that the net is closing in on the two outstanding suspects to ensure justice is served,” said Mophiring.
