A teenager who is believed to have jumped from the rooftop of the Bloemfontein’s Loch Logan Waterfront Mall, is still at the Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein. The 17-year-old, identified as a Gr. 11 learner of Grey College, is undergoing treatment after sustaining severe injuries in both his legs, his pelvis and neck.
Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State’s Department of Health, said the teenager is in the intensive care unit (ICU). “The patient is responding well to treatment but he is critical. The patient was admitted to the trauma unit on Sunday and was referred to theatre,” said Mvambi. He said paramedics from government emergency medical services (EMS) attended to the patient and thereafter transported him to the hospital for further treatment.
The boy sustained severe injuries in the incident which reportedly happened on Sunday, 19 May, at about 14:56, on the side of the premises closest to First Avenue.
“The young gentleman accesses the roof, as any member of the public is able to do, by the stairs or lifts. There is a CCTV footage of him climbing the pyramid wall, and jumping off the build,” Merylin Henning, spokesperson of the mall.
Col. Thabo Covane, spokesperson for the police in the Mangaung Metro Municipality, confirmed that members of the Parkweg Police Station were called to attend to the scene of the incident.
