BLOEMFONTEIN – A total of 29 bullet holes were counted on a minibus taxi after a shooting incident in the Central Business District of Bloemfontein. Some of these holes were believed to be caused by R4 and R5 assault rifles.

Following this incident on Thursday 19 February at approximately 21:15, a case docket of attempted murder was opened at the Parkweg Police Station in the city. The injured taxi driver and a crew member arrived in the minibus riddled with bullets at the police’s community service centre to report they were attacked by unknown persons at the Majakathata Long Taxi Rank in Short Street.

According to them, the taxi belongs to Joselda Taxi Association. They had travelled from Gauteng to Bloemfontein with 21 passengers and dropped them off at the Majakathata Long Distance Taxi Rank.

At approximately 21:15, the two males left the taxi rank in the vehicle to buy food. As they were about to turn into Short Street, they were attacked with a hail of bullets from across the street by unknown assailants.

The taxi driver kept on driving until reaching the Parkweg Police Station.

The 30-year-old injured taxi driver was rushed to a local hospital. Crime scene experts later found 11 spent bullet cartridges from R4 and R5 assault rifles at the scene and collected them as evidence.
