BLOEMFONTEIN: The Cheetahs captain and lock, Victor Kutlwano Sekekete, marked a milestone in his professional career by making his 100th appearance for the team in the Currie Cup on Friday, 29 August, in Bloemfontein. Ironically, his team suffered a humiliating defeat to his former team, the gutsy Griquas, who won 40 − 10.
Sekekete was met with a guard of honour when taking to the field. The towering player’s illustrious journey with the boys in orange began in 2020, when he joined from the Northern Cape’s Griquas. He has been an integral part of the Cheetahs, featuring in every competition. He went on to lead the Free State giants to 2023 Currie Cup glory, and this is one of his highlights.
“I feel blessed and honoured to have the privilege of playing my 100th for the Toyota Cheetahs,” says Sekekete.

He reveals that those who have come before inspired him to strive to reach the peak of his game.
“If you walk into the changing rooms and see the names of the legends who have played here, it’s very inspiring. I’m filled with gratitude as I think of my journey. I’m very grateful that I have not struggled with many injuries. My family supports me a lot.”
Sekekete’s highlights with the Cheetahs include 58 Currie Cup games; 3 Franchise Cup 2021 games; 11 Toyota Challenge games; 15 EPCR CC games; 11 SA Cup games; and a game against Georgia.

Pundits have described Sekekete as a durable player who possesses quality. They mention consistent performance and self-discipline that keep him injury-free and make him a reliable player.
Sekekete has joined a league of legends − according to Cheetahs history, players who have achieved the feat of 100 games are: Robert Ebersohn, with 100 appearances in May 2023; Aranos Coetzee, with his 100th game in August 2021 and over 100 caps; Oupa Mohoje, recognised as a 100-cap player; Clayton Blommetjies, with 129 appearances; Tian Meyer, with over 114 appearances; Chris Badenhorst, with 221 appearances; and Helgard Müller, who has amassed 245 caps.
