Grief is a multi-faceted response to loss. National Grief Awareness Day is observed on Friday, 30 August.

Five stages of grief

1. Denial: It is a conscious or unconscious refusal to accept facts. Some people may become locked in this stage.2. Anger: This manifests different in each person. Common expressions used are “Why me?” and “It’s not fair!”3. Bargaining: This stage traditionally involves seeking solutions, but it rarely provides sustainable solutions.4. Depression: It is an intense feelings of sadness and disengagement.5. Acceptance: This stage brings peace regarding the loss.

Coping strategies
  • seek out caring people;) express your feelings;) take care of your health, eat well and rest;) postpone major life changes, allow time to adjust;) be patient; and) seek outside help when necessary.
