Construction and maintenance work on an 18 km stretch of the N8 route between Thaba Nchu North and Tweespruit is set to start in October.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) announced this on Friday (28/07), after briefing stakeholders at a meeting in Bloemfontein. The state-owned company indicated that the appointment of a main contractor to deliver the project would be completed in due course.
This undertaking is part of the ongoing maintenance, rehabilitation, and upgrading of the N8 between Mangaung and Maseru.
The infrastructure project falls under the management of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) and the Thabo Mofutsanyana Municipality. It is envisaged to benefit about 40 000 individuals nationally over three years through the pre-tender coaching of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs).
Stephne Wilmot, Sanral project manager, said the agency created potential subcontracting opportunities for SMMEs, targeting young, previously marginalised people.
