Money transfer services are accessible as usual at the Shoprite retail group, which houses stores like Checkers and Usave, in South Africa and in the neighbouring countries of Lesotho and Eswatini.

The retails group has ensured continued access to the services in the wake of the new regulations impacting on electronic funds transfer (EFT) payments within the Common Monetary Area (CMA).

The new regulations became effective on Monday, 9 September. In terms of the new regulations, South African banks will cease processing EFT payments and collections within the CMA in response to new regulations and low-value cross-border payments will now be handled via a regional infrastructure payment system.

Shoprite, Checkers and Usave customers can continue to safely and securely send and receive money to CMA countries, including Lesotho and Eswatini, at more than 1 400 Money Market counters in stores.

The retail group stated that the Shoprite Money Transfer services remain fully compliant with the new regulations.

This reliable service continues to fulfil a critical need as it ensures customers can stay financially connected across borders without disruption.

In order to transfer money to Lesotho and Eswatini at any of the Shoprite Group retail outlets, the following must be adhered to:

  • Visit the Money Market counter in store with your required documents.
  • South African citizens need a South African identity document (ID) and proof of residence (stamped and not older than three months).
  • Foreign nationals must present a passport, proof of residence (stamped and not older than three months), and work permit.
  • Send up to R5 000 a day and R25 000 per month. Only cash payments are accepted.
  • There is a R25 service fee and no charges at collection.
