Sharing stories is as natural to human beings as eating and sleeping. Making time to tell children stories can be fun for everyone, believes Gogo, the national reading for enjoyment campaign Nal’ibali’s reading granny.
Storytelling has other benefits for children:
- It is a great way to teach them life lessons. Stories allow children to explore things such as love, hate, kindness, good and evil.
- Storytelling stimulates children’s imagination and their use of language.
- Stories can transport and connect children to the lives of people they have never known, and who come from long ago and from faraway places.
- When parents tell stories about their childhood experiences, it helps their children connect with them.
Book giveaway held
As Nelson Mandela’s legacy is celebrated this month, Nal’ibali notes that one of his biggest wishes for our children was for them to experience the joy of reading.
To honour that wish, Nal’ibali is giving away children’s storybook hampers (5 books each) to 10 readers and two hampers (of 20 books) to two primary schools.
