BLOEMFONTEIN: The Bloemfontein Sexual Offences Court has handed down a hefty sentence of 25 years’ direct imprisonment to Kamohelo Madito (33), for raping a minor on 23 September 2023. The sentencing was based on the strength of evidence presented in court.
Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Free State, said evidence included a witness testimony. Madito was sentenced on Tuesday, 19 August.
The victim was 13 years old at the time she was raped. The crime was committed at her family home. The court heard that Madito had raped the victim at gunpoint. On the day of the rape, the victim and her 12-year-old sister were alone at home while their mother attended a night vigil. Senokoatsane confirmed that Madito was known to both minors.
Madito reportedly entered their home, armed with a firearm. He threatened the 13-year-old, forced her to undress, and raped her while her younger sister was present in the same room.
“Despite threats from the perpetrator, both sisters demonstrated extraordinary bravery by testifying in court. Their courage played a critical role in securing justice,” said Senokoatsane. He said the matter was promptly reported by the victim to her mother, leading to Madito’s swift arrest. A thorough trial and successful prosecution by state prosecutor Azola Key culminated in Madito’s sentencing.
Senokoatsane said the sentence sends a clear message that the NPA will not tolerate crimes of sexual violence.
“The bravery shown by the young victims in reporting and testifying against the accused is commendable. Their courage ensured that a dangerous perpetrator was permanently removed from society. The NPA reaffirms its commitment to the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and the protection of vulnerable groups within our communities,” said Senokoatsane.
