Members of the Welkom Anti-Gang unit have confiscated illicit cigarettes and counterfeit goods worth an estimated R100 000. This is after arresting a 29-year-old foreign national at a well-known business area in Welkom.

Sgt Mahlomola Kareli, provincial spokesperson for the police, said these counterfeit goods included nappies, herbal tea, sanitary pads, shoe polish, hookah flavours and illicit hookah charcoal.

Kareli said the members confiscated the goods to serve as evidence.

He explained that while the members were on patrol in Welkom, they identified an area of concern behind a well-known business in Welkom. Delivery vehicles were frequenting the area.

“Two foreign nationals acting suspiciously were approached, and upon the members investigating the boxes, suspected illicit cigarettes were found at the back of their vehicle. Members continued with their search, discovering more counterfeit goods worth an estimated R100 000,” said Kareli.

He said the suspect was issued a fine for possession of illicit goods.
