An all-female production, entitled Town, will be performed live over three days in the Andre Huguenet Theatre at Pacofs in Bloemfontein. It will be performed from 4 to 6 May, starting at 18:00.

Town is set in the late 1950’s, with a cast of six female actors and singers who represent two worlds: Sophiatown and Motown. This entertaining production showcases the musical parallels between the music from Berry Gordy’s Motown Records and Sophiatown. Both had distinct influences on the music made popular in the late 1950’s.

The production derived its title from being a musical revue where the two music powerhouses fuse into one: Sophiatown meets Motown. It is directed by seasoned theatre performer and creative director, Lebo Toko.

The production promises to take the audience on a nostalgic musical journey that has been given a fresh perspective.

The simple, but rather effective, narrative is set in a dressing room as the six divas who sing at the jazz and night clubs during the late 1950’s in their respective worlds, prepare for their last show.

The characters are inspired by legendary and influential female icons from both Sophiatown and Motown. These characters, however, are in no way a representation of these musical icons.

The simple, but quite effective, storyline follows these divas as they prepare for their last show in their respective worlds.

After several years of experience from working on stage, Toko has collaborated with the young and upcoming musical maestro, Lungile Michael Themba, on creating an original South African musical revue.

The all-female cast is a mix of seasoned and some new faces to the musical theatre scene.

The cast members are Mamosebetsi Leotlela, Thato Stols, Florence Magobodi, Teddy Simanga, Boitumelo Mohutsioa, and Sibahle Mabaso.

Tickets are now available and sold at R70 to R90 per person via Webtickets, the Pacofs booking office, and at retail supermarkets namely Boxer and Pick n Pay.
