No fatalities have been reported after two horrific separate accidents which occurred in Bloemfontein yesterday morning (27/06).
The first accident on the N1 outside the city involved a bus and truck, believed to have collided a few kilometres before the exit point of the R30 road and N1, at about 01:00.
The other involved two sedans in the Dr Belcher Road subway, where a cyclist was apparently hit by one the sedans in the subway during the crash.
Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson of the Free State Department of Health, says all the survivors who sustained injuries during the two accidents were treated at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.
He said that of the 19 people treated in the hospital’s trauma unit, 17 have been discharged. Mvambi said five were to be reassessed after their X-ray results.
Both the drivers of the bus and the truck are among the survivors. According to Mvambi, there were 42 people in the bus, 40 passengers plus two drivers.
The rescue operation required specialised equipment from the Mangaung Fire and Rescue Services as well as towing services, to extricate the survivors from beneath the bus.
The exact cause of the collision between the bus and the truck is being investigated by the police.
