Nigerian man in court regarding drug trafficking case

BLOEMFONTEIN – A Nigerian national, Chinomso Henry Onyeachilam (47) has been granted bail with strict conditions in a criminal case of alleged drug possession and trafficking. The bail was set at R10 000 during appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday 2 January.

The suspected drug dealer is set to reappear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on 27 January. Onyeachilam had been remanded in custody following the postponement of his bail application during the month of December.

Acting on reliable information, the Bloemfontein’s Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) and Flying Squad arrested the suspect on the N8 road between Botshabelo and Bloemfontein on 14 December. The police received information about a person in Botshabelo allegedly operating a drug laboratory.

WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the conditions include that Onyeachilam must report to the Bloemspruit police station every Friday and honour future court appearances. She said drugs including crystal meth, CAT, and cocaine were discovered inside a Polo the suspect was driving. She said the combined drugs have an estimated street value of R387 800.

“The drugs were found hidden inside the removable car radio of the Polo. The vehicle, including three cellular phones were seized as part of further investigation,” said Matoti. An investigation revealed that the suspect is legally in South Africa.
