The first brick has been laid for the establishment of a fully-fledged library at the Popano Secondary School in Botshabelo in the shape of a significant donation from Eunice High School in Bloemfontein.

An amount of R4 000 was donated as part of a concerted effort towards reviving the Popano school library.

This was done on Wednesday, 8 May, at the launch of the Bongani Leadership Project – the brainchild of Bongani Lawrence Mathae, the speaker of the Mangaung Metro council.

He said that the idea to collaborate with Eunice High School in setting up a fully-fledged library for Popano had been prompted during his visit to Eunice as part of the back-to-back school campaign early in January.

“The decision to get involved with my former school is in response to the clarion call for persons in leadership positions to adopt a school as an additional service to the community, for the betterment and advanced development of the community.”

The Bongani Leadership Project involves the collection and donation of books in aid of the library at the Botshabelo school.

“I saw it fitting in taking a lead role to revive the Popano school library. Libraries are a great source of information, learning, and knowledge,” said Mathae.

The objective is to improve the literacy levels within the school, targeting learners as future leaders, and empowering them to be examplary in not only their capacity as learners, but their future roles.

Mathae said the project was twofold: encouraging collaboration between the two schools through interactive programmes, as well as providing reading material and books.

He envisages the initiative will go a long way in improving the quality of learning and teaching for the learners of Popano.
