BLOEMFONTIEN – The marimba band of the Brebner Primary School in Bloemfontein has established itself as part of South Africa’s vibrant marimba culture. This ensemble of talented learners captivate audiences with their mastery of playing the instrument’s unique rhythmic and melodic range.
They are a staple on the Bloemfontein music scene, frequently performing on their own and sometimes alongside other talented regional bands.
This group is known for its energetic live performances, which include a mix of traditional Southern African rhythms and contemporary arrangements.
Evidence of the group possessing amazing talent was their invitation to be part of a collective effort to break the Guinness World Record for the largest marimba ensemble.
The massive performance took place in Cape Town on 2 August last year, and featured a record-breaking 1 276-player ensemble.

Approximately 12 marimba bands from South Africa and Zimbabwe showcased their talent.
“We are now the proud holders of that prestigious title, which we share with more than 1 000 participants.
“While we were in Cape Town, we also had the opportunity to promote the Guinness World Record event further by performing at the V&A Waterfront,” said Ayanda May, band manager.
According to the music teacher, this stands out as one of the highlights of the band.
The band has been in existence for just over a year and May said it was built on a solid foundation. The band has about 30 full-time players from the school, who are in Gr.4 to Gr.7.
“The Brebner Primary School has had a marimba band for many years. Our group was formed between 2024 and 2025. Some learners started earlier, as far back as 2022. Along the way, interested learners joined our band and became our permanent marimba family,” May explained.

She said the band stands out from the rest.
“We are not just an after-school cultural activity; we are a united music family with many memories in our midst.”
In 2024, the band debuted in the Education Africa Marimba Festival held in Boksburg.
“We gained valuable experience following participation with other schools around Southern Africa,” said May.
Locally, the band performs at various events, entertaining audiences at gala dinners held at venues including restaurants, old-age homes and schools.

Their latest performance was at the Free State Department of Education’s 2025 Matric Well-Done Function held at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State.
Inspired by the musical vibrancy, Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae performed with the band a song titled “Thabo dula fatshe” – much to the delight of the audience.
“That was indeed a moment we will never forget,” said May.
May said that as a band they have a big dream.
“Our vision is to one day perform on one of the biggest stages in the world and share our uniqueness and expose our talent.
“Importantly, we want to have fun while doing it and definitely make more and more lasting memories,” said May.
