The Bloemfontein-based men’s football club Libra Masters, of which the players are off the calendar, is keeping the passion alive.
The club envisages to continue doing so by not only playing against local clubs, but also hosting invitational matches that feature clubs from other cities. In addition, Libra will criss-cross the country along national roads to honour return matches against the same opposition.
Libra will challenge other opponents, and they will do the same, honouring an old tradition regarding home and away matches. These are always non-competitive.
Stephen Suputsa, spokesperson for Libra, explains that the Masters’ Challenge is a social platform every football fraternity needs.
“We connect players and fans alike,” he says.
“The common objective of our games is basically to strengthen social cohesion, build community, and allow us get to know each other more through football, given this shared interest.
“The games enable us to socialise, network and establish an exchange with people and teams from the different places the players are originally from, around South Africa.
“We challenge each other in good spirit to promote football.”
Suputsa likens participation in the challenge to finding another man with whom to share your journey into manhood. He also highlights the beauty of being able to play with and against retired legends.
