The University of the Free State’s men’s rugby side, the Shimlas, has shaken off the cobwebs by claiming the top spot in the Varsity Cup tournament.

The team recorded an emphatic win with 35 – 26 over the reigning champion, the North West University’s Eagles, in a match played in Bloemfontein.

The Kovsies followed up on a nail-biting 34 – 31 win over the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on 26 February. The back-to-back wins stand the locals in good stead to secure a top-four finish to qualify for the semifinals.

The sterling form of this team of the University of the Free State (UFS) sent a warning signal to the University of the Western Cape (UWC) relating to the forthcoming fixture at Shimla Park on Monday, 11 March.

In the other match involving a local side this week, the Central University of Technology (CUT) recorded an important 38 – 21 win against hosts UWC in Cape Town. This saw the side atoning for the 34 – 17 loss at the hands of Wits on 26 February.

This was CUT’s second win in the competition, with the first a narrow 23 – 19 victory over UJ in Bloemfontein.

The CUT lads can only hope they retain the momentum in a tough away match against Ikeys. Victory against the Capetonians on Monday will propel the Free State boys to third position on the log – pending the results in other matches.

The Ikeys occupy the fourth spot with ten points, while CUT is in position five with nine points.
