The gruelling football battle involving Bloemfontein high school boys’ teams to secure a berth nationally in this year’s Curro Halala Cup tournament saw two qualify. Six fell by the wayside, leaving Grey College and Navalsig as the last ones standing.

These teams will represent the Free State at the national final, scheduled for August at the Heronbridge College in Gauteng.

Grey and Navalsig beat Brebner High School and Kyrios Independent School 4 – 1 and 1 – 0, respectively, to qualify for the national final.

Grey and Navalsig will not face off to determine the provincial winner as previously reported.

The two schools booked their places on Wednesday, 21 May, after winning in the third round of matches, played in Bloemfontein. They will be among the top 16 teams that qualified.

Grey and Navalsig were, however, made to sweat by their opponents en route to the

national final. In preliminary matches, Navalsig beat the Louis Botha Technical High School (THS) 2 – 0, while Grey outclassed Moroka High School 4 – 2.

In the other rounds of the competition, Brebner easily eliminated Curro 4 – 0; and Kyrios narrowly beat Calculus College with 2 – 1.

This football development tournament is organised and hosted by Curro Bloemfontein. It generates a fever pitch and unearths potential talented future football stars.

The overall winner of the tournament will receive a grand prize of R100 000.
