Patients must understand how their bodies work in order for them to heal and prevent injury.
This is a core principle that the Bloemfontein-based Koos Bierman, a blind physiotherapist, practices when working with injuries.
Bierman, who has been working in the Physiotherapy Department at the Universitas Academic Hospital for 20 years, opened a private practice at the Netcare Universitas Hospital recently.
He has a hands-on approach to asses and treat patients experiencing chronic headaches, neck and back pain, and other injuries
Bierman, who employs a variety of techniques including manual therapy, dry needles and exercise-based rehabilitation, takes an active approach towards each patients’ healing, explaining the workings of the injured limb.
He believes that the way each person moves, has a impact on the body.
“Repetitive, wrong movements can have far-reaching consequences,” he warns.
Bierman can do an analysis of the way a patient walks or runs to identify the source of injury and take preventative steps.
