The Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO) marked a ten-year milestone on 1 October, having been established in 2013.
It works to improve the country’s tax administration system, promote and champion taxpayers’ rights, and resolve complaints against the South African Revenue Service (Sars).
The OTO has published the country’s first-ever compilation of taxpayers’ rights, entitlements and obligations to promote its mandate. This document highlights taxpayers’ rights and obligations in various laws, including the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and the Tax Administration Act, and can be used as a reference tool to guide taxpayers towards information.
“We reiterate the call for taxpayers to utilise the free and impartial services provided by the OTO,” said Yanga Mputa, tax ombud.
She attributed the success already achieved to dedicated employees and supportive stakeholders, finance ministers, the National Treasury and Sars, and recognised controlling bodies in the tax sphere.
