The iconic Joe Solomon Primary School in Heidedal, Bloemfontein, celebrated a memorable milestone of prominence for 85 years. Themed “#85YearsofGreatness”, the celebration spanned four-days, from 21 to 24 (June), and brought together the present school generation and alumni.
The celebration recognised the school’s rich legacy. This being the foundation for the formation of other schools and producing intellectuals in society, being the catalyst for positive development in the broader society.
The landmark celebration was not short of creativity. This was demonstrated through performances by the school’s learners, choirs, and alumni who delivered solo and duet performances.
Tim van Rooyen composed a special 85th anniversary song which was performed by the school’s seniors during the memorable four-day occasion. The videos for these are available on Express’ Facebook page.
Learners treated the audience to fun during an eventful occasion themed “Let the Children Celebrate” on Wednesday (21/06). Additional celebratory events occurred with a glittering gala dinner held at Pacofs’ Sengangata Theatre on Friday (23/06).
The 85th birthday celebration was a trip down memory lane for scores of alumni, learners, and educators as well as managerial heads. Retired teachers and principals were recognised for their continued support to the current school management team led by Quentin Canavan, current principal.
In addition, a moment of silence was observed to remember former teachers who passed on during a function for retired teachers and principals themed “Celebration with the ones who stood the test of time.”The celebration officially ended on Saturday with a mass assembly by former learners.
High-ranking officials of the Free State Department of Education that include December Moloi, district director in the Motheo district, and Mosoeu Mokhobo, chief director, joined the celebration of the school’s landmark.
“We felt duty-bound to mark the milestone of Joe Solomon as the current school management team, to recognise its contribution and role in society. This is something that is in our system and in our hearts, to celebrate the school’s 85th birthday. This is momentous in every respect that the school turns 85 years this year and is the oldest school in Heidedal,” said Canavan.
The event was fitting in recognising Joe Solomon, the first principal after whom the school was renamed, to honour his contribution in 1980.
Remembering Joe Solomon, Past. Hubert Barlow, said: “Joe Solomon was a remarkable man. A man that was called for when the community needed a leader of his caliber. He was involved in sport, education, and the church. Solomon had unlimited love for his community. The highlights in sport was in 1940, included in the first multinational cricket team that won a cup.”
