Hawks bust Bloemfontein institute’s director and two accountants for tax fraud

The director of a Bloemfontein-based private education training institute and two accounts are facing serious charges of tax fraud.

The Bloemfontein Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team uncovered the trails of alleged tax fraud from July 2016 to September 2017.

The tax-fraud accused are Moroesi Kelello Alphomina Mangoejane (45), director of the Marematlou Training Institute and two accounts Ndlela Shadrack Mahlaba (37) and Cornellius Grobbelaar (53).

The trio will reappear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on 25 September. They first appeared on Tuesday, 27 August , the same day the elite crime fighting unite pounced on them on the strength of prima facie of cooking the books of the institute.

Grobbelaar

WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the trio were granted bail of R3 000 each with.

“They face charges of fraud and contravention of Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011,” she said.

Mahlaba

Matoti said the Hawks conducted in-depth investigation after the South African Revenue Services (Sars), reported the matter after finding discrepancies in the institute’s income tax returns.

“It is alleged that Mangoejane, the company director together with Mahlaba and Grobbelaar, both independent accountants, submitted false company income tax returns to the South African Revenue Service for the tax period from July 2016 to September 2017. As a result, Sars was prejudiced and suffered a loss to the amount of R907 294.02,” said Matoti.

The trio’s arrest and court appearance was a result of probing by the elite crime fighting wing.
