The steady rise in the gig economy presents an opportunity for unemployed youth in South Africa.

This is according to Charnel Collins, chief executive officer of National Debt Advisors.

The gig economy is a labour market that offers temporary and part-time positions filled by independent contractors and freelancers.

Collins has explained that the rising trend has already started to alleviate some of the stresses of unemployment in South Africa.

“It offers a pathway to income generation and a chance for them (the youth) to be their own bosses. However, it’s essential to approach gig work with the right skills and mindset to ensure its sustainability,” said Collins.

She has strongly emphasised the importance of equipping young people with the necessary skills to thrive in the gig economy, identifying Information Technology (IT) skills as holding added advantage.

“As technology evolves, it’s essential to continuously learn new skills to stay relevant. It is key to be proactive and assertive to take charge of your career.”

Collins indicated that wavering job security, as well as a lack of benefits and regulation, could be considered as downsides needing to be addressed.
