Women are still under-represented at senior management level in government.

Pinky Kekana, deputy minister responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluation in the presidency, revealed this at a review meeting for Free State government to gauge progress in women representation. This was held at Tuscan Rose in Bloemfontein on 28 August.

Kekana said representation by women in senior management positions in the public service sector was at 45,2% of the required 50% countrywide.

“This is concerning, 18 years after the adoption of the Department of Public Service and Administration National Policy Framework for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality,” said Kekana.

She has strongly called on departments countrywide to maximise efforts to implement the action plan aimed at attaining the required 50% at senior management level and gender transformation in the workplace.

In addition, the impact that the implementation of the eight-principle action plan has had in the public sector was also reviewed.
