The Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (Pamsa) is offering a bursary to South African final-year students or graduates of a BEng or BSc degree course in Chemical Engineering, with dreams to pursue a master’s degree in a Chemical Engineering research programme.

The deadline for early birds is 9 June, and 30 June for late applicants. Those submitting early will be given priority consideration.

The bursary and research programme is part of the company’s long-term investment in South African students who can contribute significantly to the forestry industry’s sustainability and growth.

“By supporting talented individuals who are passionate about the industry, the pulp and paper sector can secure a steady stream of talented and skilled professionals to drive innovation and growth,” said Samantha Choles, communications manager of Pamsa.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • be a final-year student or graduate of a BEng or BSc Chemical Engineering course at a registered South African university;
  • have a good academic record with a minimum 60% average in the final year of study, and must have completed studies in five years or less; and
  • be South African citizens.

Applicants must submit a CV and academic transcripts for all years of study, as well as letters of reference and motivation.

The bursary of R320 000 covers accommodation and books, plus a monthly stipend for two years or the duration of study to attain a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

Students who successfully graduate are employed as engineers-in-training at participating Pamsa-member companies, enabling them to gain much-needed practical experience.

The programme is specifically designed to provide financial assistance to those looking to make an impact. It further offers students an opportunity to work on innovative and exciting projects related to the paper and pulp industry. During that time, students focus on research projects relating to the beneficiation of wood, fibre, recycled fibre or process waste, resource efficiency, and more.

Mahlogonolo Mafela, is one of the bursary beneficiaries. She is a process engineer in training at Mpact. “I am thrilled to be able to contribute to a cleaner environment through
my work at one of PAMSA’s partner organisations and my current research
project. Thanks to the PAMSA Bursary and Research Programme people like me are
being empowered to build a more sustainable future,” said Mafela.

Interested candidates who qualify must apply through the Pamsa website at thepaperstory.co.za by selecting the “Research” link, under the “Industry” tab. Email enquiries are welcome at info@thepaperstory.co.za.
