The Free State was, again, a notable absentee at this year’s cadet and junior tournament of the South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo), held in Tzaneen, Limpopo, from 24 to 29 September.
The provincial team was pulled from participation on the eve of the championship, continuing the trend of the past two years.
Insufficient funds to cover the costs of travelling, accommodation, and meals was again cited as the chief reason for the late cancellation. Despite having at least 13 boxers selected for the championship in Limpopo, the provincial body could not get any assistance. This was the smallest group, compared to previous years.
The late withdrawal saw the efforts of preparing the budding boxing stars go to waste. Local boxing club managers lament the continual lack of support, which negatively impacts on the sport and discourages aspiring athletes who are passionate about the sport.
The provincial team also did not participate in the 2022 and 2023 tournaments.
This year the province only managed to feature in one national tournament, staged in Durban during July, winning four bronze medals. Those who finished on the podium in Durban include two young women, Botle Thabatha and Sebina Lekhelebane, while the boys were Daniel Neethling and Khumo Ditshidi.
