The Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, MaQueen Letsoha-Mothae, and her protection team made a lucky escape after managing to avoid a potentially dangerous car crash in Bloemfontein yesterday, 5 November. The incident occurred at about 14:30 on the M10, one of the busiest routes in the city.
Zama Sigwebela, spokesperson for Letsoha-Mothae, said the driver of the MEC’s vehicle managed to avoid a collision with the vehicle whose driver was found to be a foreigner, illegally in South Africa. He said the unknown male was found to originate from Malawi and was apparently using a cell phone while driving when he almost collided with the vehicle Letsoha-Mothae was travelling in.
Sigwebela said in the wake of the incident, the man was stopped for questioning about his conditions and the validity of his driver’s license was checked, leading to the discovery that he was in the country illegally.
“The driver was taken to the Navalsig Police Station where law enforcement officers requested documentation which was discovered to be fraudulent. The suspect is remanded in custody and is facing a charge of violation of Immigration Act 13 of 2002.
“The executive authority strongly emphasises that all foreign nationals living in South Africa abide by the laws of this country, have valid documentation, and follow proper channels and procedures to reside in the country,” said Sigwebela. He said an investigation was underway surrounding the man’s circumstances including the vehicle.
