Three alleged illicit diamond dealers are expected to make their first appearance in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 7 June.
This followed their arrest on Wednesday, 5 June.
The trio’s arrest was culmination of an intelligent operation undertaken by the Welkom’s Hawks and the police Crime Intelligence unit. Col. Zweli Mohobeleli, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the law enforcement agents arrested the three men, aged between 40 and 55, after finding in their possession six uncut and unpolished diamonds.
“The diamonds are still to be tested, and the value will be known after report is provided,” said Mohobeleli.
He said the suspects face initial charge of contravention of the Diamonds Act 56 of 1986.
Mohobeleli said the suspects were cornered at the Goldfields Mall in Welkom.
“Information was received about diamond smuggling involving the suspects. Members of the Hawks in Welkom, assisted by Crime Intelligence, operationalised the information, resulting in arrests,” said Mohobeleli.
He said the trio was travelling in a Mercedes Benz.
