South Africa’s astute Archbishop Cecil Thabo Makgoba (62) has received double honour, mere days apart, from two of South Africa’s leading universities, namely the Rhodes University (RU) and the University of the Free State (UFS).

The institutions have bestowed on him honorary degrees during their autumn graduation ceremonies at their respective campuses. The double honour recognises his strong advocacy against corruption, the abuse of power, and unwavering commitment to justice and ethical leadership.

The UFS conferred on Makgoba the honorary title of Doctor of Theology (Honoris Causa) during a graduation ceremony at the Qwaqwa campus on 12 April, following the RU honouring Makgoba by bestowing on him the title of Doctor of Laws (LLD) (honoris causa) on 4 April.

The UFS stated that the honorary Doctor of Theology degree was awarded on the grounds of other exceptional achievements of public service in accordance with the ideals and principles of the UFS, adding that the recognition resonates with Makgoba’s remarkable journey of resilience and unwavering commitment to uplifting communities, dedicating his life to fostering social justice, education, and spiritual guidance.

The RU stated the honorary degree recognised Makgoba for his unwavering commitment to justice and ethical leadership, for being a respected figure within the Anglican church, for leadership qualities he displays, and for his legacy as a champion for integrity, human rights, and social justice in South Africa and beyond.

The latest recognition adds to the long list of honours to Makgoba. They include, among others, honorary doctorates from the General Theological Seminary, New York; the Huron University College, Ontario; the University of the South, Tennessee; the University of Witwatersrand (Wits); and the Stellenbosch University (SU).
