Eskom is urging its customers who use prepaid electricity meters at their households to recode their meters by the deadline of 24 November.
This recoding requested by Eskom is in line with the requirements set by the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA) – the global standard for the transfer of electricity and other utility prepayment tokens, ensuring inter-operability between system components from different manufacturers.
The power supplier has indicated that failure to recode a device before the deadline will result in the meters no longer accepting electricity tokens unless they are updated to Key Revision Number (KRN) 2.
There will be no extension after the deadline of 24 November for the Token Identifier (TID) update.
The recoding process affects approximately 6,9 million prepaid meter customers in Eskom-supplied areas.
“Failure to recode will prevent customers with prepaid meters from loading electricity tokens, rendering their meters inoperable,” the electricity supplier has stated.
Eskom said that it has already prepared 97% of the meters by pre-coding them, making it simple for customers to complete the process themselves.
Customers who have not yet recoded their meters need to act promptly to avoid service disruptions.
The entity has provided a brief how-to guide for customers to complete the task themselves.
Recoding made simple
In short, customers must purchase credit tokens from authorised vendors in the country.
Thereafter, they will receive two sets of 20-digit long codes to enter into their meter for the update, in addition to the code to load the credit they have purchased.
