This year’s South African National Darts championship, hosted by the Free State Darts Federation, is underway at the Mangaung Indoor Sports Centre in Bloemfontein.

The event started on Sunday, 23 June, and will end on 29 June, with a prize ceremony.

The men’s tournament hosts 75 players and the women’s 57 players, representing the nine provinces. Each province is represented by a junior and senior team.

John Steele, business manager of Darts South Africa, said the expectation was that the players would unleash their best, eyeing selection into the Protea national team.

“The chosen national team will represent South Africa in the World Darts Federation World Cup to take place in South Korea in 2025. The team is hoping to improve on last year’s performance in Denmark. The team finished in the last 16 of the men’s groups, out of the 49 countries that took part.”

Steele said the youth team still stood out for their highest achievement in 2015, following a historic win by Tayla Carolissen, who won the World Cup.
