Bafana Bafana’s head coach, Hugo Broos, insisted on collecting maximum points (21 in total) during the remaining world cup qualifier matches.
The motivation behind this is Bafana’s 3 – 1 demolition of Zimbabwe in a qualifier tie played at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on the evening of Tuesday, 11 June.
Broos insists on achieving an automatic qualification as opposed to play-offs that feature the best runners-up of African teams.
The other remaining crucial qualifier matches to be played next year in March will be home matches against Lesotho (17 March), Benin (25 March), and Rwanda (13 October).
The other tough games will be return legs against Nigeria and Zimbabwe during September.
“It is crucial we win all the game at home. It is an advantage that we must use to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
“I believe that with 21 points we are assured to qualify for the World Cup, there is no doubt about it. But again, is depends on the results of other nations also competing to qualify. Our task is to ensure we continue to perform well and collect every point in all the matches,” said Broos, the Belgian mentor tasked with leading Bafana Bafana to their fourth appearance in the world football showpiece.
South Africa has appeared in the Fifa World Cup on three occasions, namely in 1998, 2002, and 2010.
The third appearance was by virtue of being the host country.
