The closure of the Medfontein building, utilised by the Free State’s Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport (CSRT), will remain so for a “prolonged period”. It was announced that the building will remain closed for about 30 days while a detailed report is awaited from the Free State Department of Labour on factors that need immediate attention to ensure compliance to health and safety rules.

On 12 May, the provincial Department of Labour shut down the building in St Andrew Street after an inspection had revealed the property was not compliant.

An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team conducted the inspection, which found that conditions were too risky for the workers to continue rendering essential services to the public.

The team issued a prohibition notice to ensure the building becomes compliant with rules in accordance to OHS.

This team raised alarm regarding various issues, among which were faulty electrical wiring.

The building houses approximately 130 employees, who render much-needed services to the public.

Hillary Mophethe, spokesperson for the department, informed the public they would be updated on developments regarding the building, which was still closed during Express’ visit on Tuesday (20/06), where a notice of closure was seen.

The department’s logo on the front wall of the building was noticeably faded.

“Serious concerns were raised regarding employees’ ability to safely conduct their business, and the building was closed until the necessary repairs could be made,” said Jafta Mokoena, DA member of the Free State Legislature.
