Clarens is one of the most envied destinations in South Africa, as revealed by a recent survey conducted among 3 000 South Africans. The survey by Top10OnlineCasinos has the Free State town ranked 30th.

Nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, Clarens is known for its artistic community and natural beauty, thus often referred to as the “Jewel of the Free State”.

The town offers a quiet, scenic lifestyle with a vibrant art scene, making it a popular retreat for creatives and nature lovers alike.

According to the history that can be traced online, the town was established in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland, where the exiled Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic, spent his last days.

The town is one of the most treasured small towns in South Africa. It is also known for the several creative arts and crafts shops that offer visitors a wide range of curious and original artwork, spectacular sandstone mountains and wonderful climate. Clarens has recently been acclaimed for having the best trout fishing waters in South Africa.

There are numerous things to do in Clarens, and spots for tourists to explore. Also, the town is the gateway when looking to escape and take on adventures in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

While Clarens represents the Free State well, the survey results underscore a clear trend, with the Western Cape leading with 19 envied locations, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with six and Gauteng with five.
