The renowned Prof. Bonang Mohale will continue serving as chancellor of the University of the Free State (UFS), after the extension of his term until 2030.
The UFS announced this on 7 October, confirming the extension of Mohale’s term with another five years, from 4 June 2025 to 3 June 2030.
The university’s council approved it at a meeting held on 27 September. He was appointed in his current position on 4 June 2020.
Mohale is the former president of the Business Unity South Africa (Busa), professor of practice at the Johannesburg Business School (JBS) in the faculty of Business and Economics, and chairman of the Bidvest Group Limited and ArcelorMittal listed entities, as well as Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Africa and SBV Services.
In November 2001, he received the Presidential Award for his “servanthood in the South African industry and the economic empowerment of previously disadvantaged individuals”.
“The council and I are delighted that Prof. Mohale will continue to fulfil the role of titular head of the university,” said David Noko, chairperson of the UFS Council.
Mohale, in turn, said it was a great honour to serve for another term.
“I am absolutely touched, profoundly humbled, and deeply honoured indeed. I am fully committed to continuing to advance the interests of the UFS and to be one of its ambassadors, and I wish to thank the council for the confidence bestowed onto me.”
Mohale has multiple feathers in his cap. He is the recipient of: the African Union’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa Career Summit and Gala Awards for his exceptional contribution and achievements; the 2024 Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology South Africa (Siopsa) Special Presidential Business Leadership Award for commitment to ethical leadership, social justice, and economic transformation; the 2023 ME-Vision Academy Award for Exclusive Recognition in Successful Leadership for leading himself and others successfully; and was recognised for successfully leading as a senior executive and chief executive officer, as well as for leading society and mentoring and inspiring future leaders.
