The fraud case involving one of the established law firms in Bloemfontein, Matsepes Inc. Attorneys, and its former admin clerk is set to continue in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on 25 May. The matter between Herman Daniel Badenhorst and the law entity has been ongoing since May last year.
It followed the arrest of the suspect by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Bloemfontein, regarding the alleged fraud of R4 million.
The elite crime fighting wing launched an investigation after the law entity reported the matter following the discovery of fraud. It was confirmed that Badenhorst was subsequently fired.
Capt. Christopher Singo, provincial spokesperson of the Hawks, said the fraud was committed from February 2018 until January 2021. He said Badenhorst faces charges of fraud and money laundering.
“He allegedly swindled the firm by authorising payments from insolvent estate accounts, and then filed the necessary requisitions for payments to be made into his personal bank accounts,” said Singo. Badenhorst is currently out on bail of R10 000.
