The by-election in ward 47 of the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) in Bloemfontein is set for 29 November.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Free State confirmed the date.
Previously held by the DA, the ward became vacant following the resignation of Mokgadi Kganaka. She was elected in 2019, replacing John de Bruin, who also resigned. She has since joined the newly formed Rise Mzansi, as the convener of this party in the Free State.
The number of registered voters is 8 645, who are expected to go and vote for their preferred councillor.
Previous by-elections that were held in July this year occurred in wards 7, 29, 49, and 50.
The four wards retained by the ruling party, the ANC, became vacant after the party had expelled those councillors. They were part of seven representatives sacked by the ruling party. The party cited that those fired voted with opposition parties to unseat the ANC in the MMM council.
This culminated in the ruling party losing the powerful position of speaker to the DA, whose candidate, Maryke Davies, served a short stint in the council.
The ANC in Mangaung has regained the speaker position after it successfully removed Davies through a motion of no confidence in September, with Lawrence Mathae elected as speaker.
The DA announced that Rudi Maartens was the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election of ward 47.
