Applications for bursaries are open to learners with an interest to study in the water and sanitation sector. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is offering bursaries to Gr. 12 learners to pursue tertiary studies.

Interested learners are encouraged to apply for these bursaries for the 2024 academic year before 30 November.

Applications opened on 1 July and are offered to learners with outstanding academic performance, who have financial need, and possess the relevant skill set in the sector.

Bursaries cover full tuition fees, accommodation, food as per university guidance, books and stationery allowance, and a monthly stipend.

For the 2024 academic year, the department will only consider applications for first-year students studying towards these qualifications:

  • BSc or BEng in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering;
  • BSc in Hydrology or Geohydrology, Environmental Management, Project Management, Environmental Sciences or Environmental and Water Sciences;
  • BSc (Hons) in Hydrology or Geohydrology, Environmental Management, Project Management, Environmental Sciences or Environmental and Water Sciences;
  • a national diploma or BEng Tech in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) or Water Care; and
  • Environmental Management.

Through the bursary, the department then provides employment contracts during which the bursary holders get relevant workplace exposure and additional training until they are ready to register as professionals with their relevant professional bodies.

Application forms can be sent to bursaries@dws.gov.za.

For more information, learners are encouraged to visit the department’s website at dws.gov.za, and its official social media pages.
