After two months in hospital, fighting for her life after a brutal attack in a gender-based violence (GBV) related incident, Dolly Maitumeleng Lebetsa (37), a Botshabelo woman, has died. The Free State Department of Social Development has confirmed she died at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein on Tuesday (04/07).
According to Thembile Nqabeni, spokesperson of the department, Lebetsa succumbed to severe burn wounds she sustained after her husband allegedly set her on fire on 12 May.
“She has been in hospital for medical care. Unfortunately, Lebetsa succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, despite bravely fighting for her life. She becomes the latest victim of the GBV pandemic, despite numerous awareness campaigns,” said Nqabeni.
The husband allegedly doused her with petrol and thereafter set her on fire. The incident happened at the couple’s residence in Section A of Botshabelo. The reason for the brutal attack is being investigated by police.
Motshidise Koloi, MEC of Social Development, has expressed outrage about the woman’s death.
“It is increasingly becoming apparent that the women of our country are under siege from marauding beasts who claim to be men. We therefore call on law enforcement agencies to up the ante and confront these cowards head-on to put an end to these vicious killings.
“We also appeal for a speedy trial and heavy punishment for the suspect if convicted of the crime, so that the bereaved family can put this tragedy behind them. On behalf of the department, I wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” said Koloi.
