Bloemfontein: Two medical specialist cardiologists from Bloemfontein achieved separate milestones just days apart. Dr Nico van der Merwe and Dr Marius Oosthuysen successfully implemented cardiac interventions at the Life Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Oosthuysen successfully completed an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) on Monday, 14 July, following the first Medtronic cardiac resynchronisation therapy-defibrillator (CRT-D) implementation – also by Oosthuysen – on 8 July.

The two specialists worked with a capable team of the cardiac catheterisation laboratory – or cath lab – of the hospital. These innovative technologies reportedly enhanced patient care.

Oosthuysen stated that the new ICD features intravascular lead placement, providing targeted and effective defibrillation and pacing therapies to manage life-threatening heart rhythms and prevent sudden cardiac arrest. The device incorporates advanced functionalities such as anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) and remote monitoring, designed to improve patient outcomes and convenience.

“The implantation of this innovative ICD device represents a major step forward for cardiac care in the Free State. Our patients now have access to cutting-edge technology that not only treats dangerous arrhythmias but also allows us to monitor their heart health remotely, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits,” said Oosthuysen.

The benefits to patients and the community

The Medtronic’s ICD technology offers several key advantages, namely:

* Detects and corrects dangerous heart rhythms to prevent sudden cardiac arrest.

* Provides continuous, 24/7 monitoring with automatic therapy delivery as needed.

* Offers patients peace of mind and the confidence to safely resume normal daily activities.

* Enables healthcare providers to track patient progress remotely, allowing timely treatment adjustments.

Van der Merwe’s successful completion of the first implantation of the Medtronic’s latest Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy Defibrillator (CRT-D) on 8 July was the first in the Free State. According to Van der Merwe, this new-generation heart device is a game-changer for patients living with heart failure and irregular heart rhythms.

“It keeps a close eye on the heart, steps in when needed, and helps lower the risk of sudden cardiac events. This technology allows us to step in earlier when a patient’s condition changes, which means we can offer more personalised and effective care,” said Van der Merwe.

“We’re proud to make this kind of treatment available right here in Bloemfontein.”

Van der Merwe said the device specialises in using smart algorithms to detect abnormal heart rhythms and deliver the right therapy – whether it’s gentle pacing, a synchronized shock, or high-energy defibrillation. “It also has built-in sensors that help identify signs of heart failure getting worse, so doctors can act quickly. Plus, its longer battery life and improved diagnostics mean fewer replacements and better everyday care for patients,” said the specialist cardiologist.

Hein Rossouw, manager at the Life Rosepark hospital, has congratulated both specialist practitioners on their achievements. “Our commitment to bringing innovative, life-saving technology closer to home is stronger than ever. Congratulations to Dr Oosthuysen and Dr Van der Merwe, including the cath lab team for their dedication and expertise in making this breakthrough possible.”
