The Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein is presenting a unique artwork exhibition titled Breath. Body. Art: An Embodied Experience. This continues to highlight the importance of museums as the cornerstone of human development and historic information sources for the public.
The public can view the exhibition until 25 June. It officially opened on 18 May and coincided with the 2023 International Museum Day commemoration. The theme for this year is Museums, Sustainability and Well-Being. This global campaign highlights the role, value, and significance of museums in society. It explores how museums are key contributors to sustaining communities, provide an inclusive safe environment, and are uniquely placed to create a cascading effect to foster positive change.
The museum is presenting this artwork exhibition to further highlight the significance of museums as contributors to wellness.
“Breathwork is the practice of a variety of breathing exercises that weave the mind and body together. When we encourage different breathing patterns on a conscious level, we are entering our nervous system. That results in a feeling of immersion, focus, involvement, and enjoyment,” explains Isabelle Grobler, breathwork specialist and Free State-based visual artist. Artworks in this exhibition were selected from the Oliewenhuis museum’s permanent collection and the Art Bank of South Africa’s contemporary art collection.
The museum is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 17:00, and on weekends and public holidays from 09:00 to 16:00. A R10 parking fee will be charged, but entrance to the museum is free. A ramp at the main entrance provides access for wheelchair users.
