The Thaba Bosiu – The Musical performance, celebrating 200 years of the nationhood of the Basotho’s history, will resume tomorrow and continue until Thursday, 5 October. This can be watched live at Pacofs in the Sand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein.
This will be the second episode following the opening from 27 to 30 September. This celebration of Basotho dates back to when Morena Moshoeshoe I escaped the ravages of the Difaqane/ Mfecane wars in 1824.
An international heritage site, this plateau is situated in the Phuthiatsana Valley, south-east of the Lesotho capital, Maseru. It was named Thaba Bosiu (mountain at night) during the occupation of Moshoeshoe, founder of the Basotho nation in 1824.
Celebrating the rich heritage of the Basotho, the drama reflects the triumphs and tribulation of Moshoeshoe and his fellow troops, and how they came up with the name Thaba Bosiu to intimidate his enemies in 1824. It was on this plateau where Moshoeshoe effectively defended his people from attacks by Shaka Zulu’s soldiers and the Afrikaners until 1868.
This lively drama effortlessly interweaves traditional Basotho games, song, dance, and vocal music interlaced within the dialogue to tell the fascinating story of King Moshoeshoe’s reign as peacemaker. He is well-known for successfully combining aggressive military counteraction and adroit diplomacy against colonial invasions.
This theatrical piece centralizes poetic license, and Sotho and English bilingualism.
This historical play aims to captivate audiences with its breathtaking visuals, soul stirring performance, and intricate storytelling.
The drama is directed by Napo Masheane, a multi-award winning playwright, poet, creative producer, and cultural activist. It runs from 12:00 until 14:00, and then 18:00 until 20:00. Tickets are available at WebTicket and Pacofs’ booking office.
