Reach For A Dream, a non-profit body, calls on South Africans to again show their humanity and compassion by contributing towards the annual Slipper Day initiative.
This will have its culmination on 5 May.
The proceeds from this initiative will be put forward to benefit children between the ages of three and 18 years who are battling life-threatening illnesses.
The public can contribute by purchasing supporter stickers, which are selling for R20 each at various retail partners.
By purchasing these, South Africans help children reach for their dreams, while they in turn earn the right to wear their slippers to work or school on Slipper Day.
“Slipper Day is our biggest annual fundraiser, with all funds going towards fulfilling the dreams of children who are facing some of the toughest challenges life can throw at them,” said Julia Sotirianakos, chief executive officer (CEO) of Reach For A Dream.
“We are calling on all South Africans to support Slipper Day. Not only to celebrate these brave dreamers, but to inspire hope among them so they know that no matter what obstacles arise, they are never alone in their journey.
“This not only gives these youngsters and their families an invaluable respite from daily stressors associated with ill health, but stirs up much-needed courage and hope, helping these little ones believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for,” she explained.
Sotirianakos said support from the public enabled the foundation to raise over R8,3 million, with the target having been set at ultimately raising R10 million.
She stated that more than 2 000 children have benefited from the charity campaign.
Launched as a local initiative in 2011, the Slipper Day campaign has grown into what is today a nationwide movement, being supported by compassionate members of the community and the public-private sector.
Support for the organisation’s initiative has been illustrated in various forms.
To participate in the charity campaign and show their support, members of the public, as well as private entities, are encouraged to visit reachforadream.org.za to purchase a pair of slippers or socks, and also to place a bulk order of supporter stickers.
