The Peter Swartz Foundation in Bloemfontein has received a donation of equipment to advance the nurturing of young visual artists’ skills.
The foundation’s centre is situated in Bloemside and develops artists in the area, as well as Peter Swartz and Bergman Square.
The equipment worth R20 000, courtesy of the Windmill Casino in Bloemfontein, was donated as part of corporate social investment. It is envisaged to go a long way in empowering the 42 visual artists and crafters currently enrolled in the foundation’s programme.
Johan Oosthuizen, general manager of the casino, said the support was aimed at advancing the development of artists by strengthening fundamentals.
“Art has long been a tool for cultural exchange, education, and expression,” he said.
The Peter Swartz Foundation non-government organisation was registered in 2017, and focuses on the awakening and development of the artistic skills of learners from rural, disadvantaged communities.
“We are pleased to support the development of the arts, which stimulates creativity and thinking outside the box,” said Oosthuizen.
“We hope this donation of art supplies and equipment will help promote arts and crafts within the community, and further help to develop more children through the exploration of the arts.”
Stanley Swartz, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of the foundation, said the gesture would enable them to empower the youth with skills to use their talent to provide for themselves and their families.
“Most are orphaned learners and some have single parents – mostly mothers. They are enrolled in the skills art development programme. Some participate in arts, culture and heritage programmes and possess an abundance of talent in need of nurturing,” said Swartz.
Classes are offered three days per week from 15:00 to 17:00 after school, and on Saturdays from 10:00 until 14:00.
Parents who would like to enrol their children can call Swartz on 073-490-5975.
