BLOEMFONTEIN – A suspected conman who was masquerading as a professional football player to defraud unsuspecting people and businesses has been remanded in custody while the police continue with a full-scale investigation. The police are profiling his identity and origin as well as criminal cases involved.

Sgt Mahlomola Kareli, provincial spokesperson for the Free State police, said ten businesses have come forward to open cases of theft following the arrest of a suspect operating under the false identity of Junior Mahlangu. The police busted him on 17 February in Bloemfontein.

Kareli said of these cases opened by complainants, one business was from Limpopo province and two from Hillbrow in Johannesburg. He said the investigation includes a black Volkswagen Golf 8 which was confiscated during his arrest. The car, bearing registration number MT 51 CM GP, was found in his possession at the time of his arrest.

According to Kareli, the suspect speaks the Sotho language fluently. He said part of the investigation involves profiling to establish the suspect’s true identity in addition to investigating individuals and businesses he scammed. He said a preliminary investigation revealed the suspect was targeting businesses in Bloemfontein. Kareli said the man was facing multiple charges including theft and fraud.

Given the complex nature of his modus operandi, the police have released his photo for circulation as part of concerted efforts to resolve fraud cases involving him. The police are urging individuals and business entities around Bloemfontein that might have been defrauded to immediately come forward to provide evidence.
