Two women who sustained severe injuries after a fatal accident that claimed a third woman, are still admitted at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.
The three women were admitted to the hospital on 24 January for medical treatment for varying serious injuries.
The third victim, identified as Adelina Motsamai, reportedly succumbed to her injuries on 26 January while the two survivors remain in hospital. One of the survivors has been identified as Kgomotso Modiakgotla (33) from Bloemfontein.
The accident that claimed the life of Motsamai reportedly happened in Hilton, at about 17:30. The three women were reportedly on foot, planning to board a taxi, when a speeding motorist crashed into them from behind. The surviving victims’ injuries include fractures to the upper leg and thigh, as well head injuries.
Ikobeng Hlubi, spokesperson for the police the Mangaung Metro, said a case of reckless and negligent driving was initially opened for investigation against the driver who was driving a Toyota Tazz. She said following Motsamai’s death, the charge was changed to culpable homicide.
Hlubi said according to information received, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, ultimately crashing into the three who women who were on foot.
Upon losing control of the vehicle, the driver allegedly crashed into Motsamai then Modiakgotla and the other woman who accompanied her to board a taxi.
Motsamai left behind five small children who she looked after and cared for. It is understood that she was the sole provider in the family that resides in Phase 6, Bloemfontein.
The two survivors are reportedly in stable condition while being monitored by medical practitioners. It is unclear whether the driver sustained any injuries during the fatal accident.
Hlubi said the police were continuing with the investigation into the fatal accident.
